Originally, the term included the coastal locations from Manilva/Estepona to Malaga, but it was widened to include all the coastal towns from Sotogrande (West) to Nerja (East). Finally, the term was widened again to include inland locations such as Ronda and Antequera.
While the western side (Sotogrande to Malaga) is wide urbanised and present outstanding resorts, luxury options (many of them around Marbella) and a myriad of services, the eastern part (Malaga to Nerja) is a more rural destination where many tropical fruits are grown, from avocados to mangoes.

The Costa del Sol presents a Mediterranean climate with softer temperatures the closer you are to the Mediterranean Sea.
In coastal locations, you can expect nice winter nights (7-11 ºC) with warm days (13-18ºC). Summers next to the Mediterranean Sea present warm nights (20-25ºC) and hot days (27-33ºC). On the other hand, inland locations are rainier and present colder winters (3-8 ºC at night, and not exceeding 12ºC during the day), while summers are also hotter and reaching up to 36ºC.
